Mansa Musa (c. 1280–c. 1337)

 

Mansa Musa was the emperor of the Mali Empire and is often considered one of the wealthiest individuals in history. 

His famous pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324 showcased the immense wealth of Mali and brought global attention to West Africa.

Beyond his wealth, Mansa Musa was a patron of education, arts, and architecture, building the renowned University of Timbuktu and various other institutions.

His reign highlighted the flourishing culture and economy of Africa before European colonialism.
